St. Anthony Hospital Imaging Center - Moving the Magnet

"Hole-in-the-Wall-Gang" Witnesses Success!

Saints Medical Plaza, completed in 2007, is a 100,000-square-foot medical office building on the St. Anthony Hospital campus in the heart of Oklahoma City. The imaging center finish-out is currently under construction. The relocation of the magnet to the medical plaza will allow the hospital the ability to provide MRIs at both locations.

To prepare for the MRI magnet’s move, the new MRI room was fitted with the installation of electromagnetic shielding the day prior. On the morning of the move, the panel was carefully prepped by Flintco Construction company and a forklift was used to lift it off of the side of the building.  The magnet was flown out through the roof of its old location in the main hospital by crane and secured on a flatbed truck to be driven to the medical plaza.

The magnet was removed from the flatbed by forklift and lifted into the opening where “skates” were placed  under the feet of the magnet designed to slowly roll it into place. Representatives from St. Anthony, ADG, Flintco Construction and GE (the MRI manufacturer) were present to oversee the process and ensure that the magnet was properly installed. The panel was then put back in place and the opening was sealed. The process of moving the magnet, which was estimated to take three days, was completed in one day.
