Little Axe Health Center Dedicates New Building
Little Axe, Oklahoma, May 16, 2012—A proud community looked on as the Absentee Shawnee Tribe joined Indian Health Services to open the doors to the new 79,000-square-foot Little Axe Health Center. The grand opening ceremony was honored with a flag-raising by the Absentee Shawnee Veteran’s Association and the Scissortail Drum Group, and blessed with a tribal prayer given by Isaac Gibson, Sr., Tribal Elder. George Blanchard, Governor of the Absentee Shawnee Tribe, and Kevin Meeks, Area Director for Indian Health Services, both spoke at the ceremony.
ADG was hired by the Absentee Shawnee Tribe to provide program management services on the clinic after construction had already begun on the $26 million building. The firm provided weekly site visits and reviews of plans and specifications. This review identified a number of issues which were resolved prior to a major portion of construction and resulted in advancing the project schedule by six weeks.
Located on the southeastern edge of the rural community of Little Axe, the center includes a primary care clinic comprised of family practice and pediatric units, and a same-day appointment clinic. The primary care clinic includes 19 exam rooms and 3 minor procedure rooms. The center also includes a dental clinic with space for 16 dental chairs. An optometry department provides eye care and education.
The center also includes a behavioral health department, diabetes and wellness programs. A public health nursing department will focus on women’s health and immunizations. Other services provided by the center will include lab and radiology, a full-service drive-thru pharmacy, triage and treatment for minor procedures. The center will also feature a wellness and fitness center.
